Food wastage

When purchasing a new fridge freezer, it is important to look at some technology that the appliance has. Manufacturers are finding new ways to keep food fresher for longer. The average family will throw away around £300 per year on wasted food. Therefore, if you could keep your food fresher for longer then you will be throwing away much less and therefore your new appliance has paid for itself. If you have had your old appliance for more than 10 years and you throw away £300 a year of food each year, then that is £3000 wasted. This is often overlooked when purchasing a new fridge freezer where people look at the initial cost of the actual appliance.

Technology

Some appliances have air vents in the salad drawer to help you get air circulation in there, this you can turn on or off depending on whether you want less or more moisture. Some appliances such as Bosch and Siemens have ‘Hydrofresh’ where you can keep food fresher for twice the amount of time of a standard fridge. They also have an option for ‘Vitafresh’ where you can keep food fresher for up to 3 times as long. For instance, a standard fridge could keep carrots fresh for 50 days, a Hydro Fresh will keep them fresh for 100 days and a ‘Vitafresh’ will keep them fresh for 150 days.

Some of these appliances also have an air fresh filter where once the moisture reaches 90% humidity it lets it breath until there is under that amount then it will hold the humidity at the correct level.
